The first order is where most of the risk sits

Once a research relationship with a supplier is established, most ordering becomes routine — the documentation is familiar, the dispatch process is known, and any issues have a track record of being resolved. The first order carries none of that. It's the point where a handful of direct questions, asked before committing, does more to protect a research timeline than anything printed on a product page.

These are the questions worth asking, and roughly what a well-run supplier should be able to answer without hesitation.

"Is a certificate of analysis provided with every order, or only on request?"

This should be a standard inclusion, not something chased down after the fact. A supplier that hesitates on this question, or can only produce a COA reactively, is signalling something about how documentation is handled more generally.

"What's the actual dispatch timeline, including cut-off times?"

"Fast dispatch" printed on a homepage isn't a timeline. A specific answer — order cut-off time, typical processing day, and expected delivery window — is what actually allows a research schedule to be planned around it. "How are compounds stored and packaged before they reach me?"

Cold, dark, controlled storage prior to dispatch and insulated, light-protected packaging in transit should be a clear, describable process — not a vague assurance. If a supplier can't explain this beyond "we package it well," that's worth treating as a gap. "What happens if my order is delayed, damaged, or doesn't match its documentation?"

Every supplier will eventually have an order that needs attention. What matters is whether there's a clear, specific process for resolving it — not just a general "contact us" page. A vague or evasive answer here is one of the more reliable indicators of how support will actually behave once a real issue comes up, covered further in our guide to UK peptide supplier red flags.

"Is stock UK-held, and dispatched from within the UK?"

This affects delivery time, customs risk, and recourse if something goes wrong — a fuller comparison is set out in our UK vs overseas sourcing guide. A supplier should be able to answer this plainly and immediately.

"Are your products framed consistently as research-use-only, across the whole site?"

Using these questions in practice

None of these require a long back-and-forth — a supplier that has its process properly built out should be able to answer all six clearly, quickly, and consistently with what's already published on its own site. Hesitation, vagueness, or answers that contradict the website itself are the actual signal to watch for, more than any single answer in isolation.
